Tame Paper Clutter with a Tablet

This month was a hectic one… travelling the length and the breadth of the country, attending college counselling sessions with our son. Home front and blogging has suffered but I am not complaining, this is a significant phase in our lives…and we were prepared for it. Now that everything is settled I can get back to what I love doing- taking care of my home, enjoying my job and blog! While filling up umpteen number of application forms, I realized what a valuable asset my tablet is!  It is advised to retain a photocopy of the filled-up application (even the online ones were to be printed and sent by post, one has to retain that copy too). I never kept a photocopy of any of them, I simply took  pictures of them or scanned them with my tablet! All applications are neatly stored in my tab for printing/  e-mailing or for a quick reference. Here is an example of one of them!

Having told you all that, I’m very excited to announce that I would be sharing a series of fortnightly posts to tell you what all I do to simplify my life, my home and my blogging experiences with my Dell Venue 8 tablet. Starting with, how I tame paper clutter with a tablet. First &  foremost, de-clutter and segregate all important documents that are to be stored in a safe, moisture proof/ fireproof vault/, cabinet. And get rid of old inapplicable papers/documents. Some of the important documents, for a safe storage, could be your:

  • Birth Certificates
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Degrees, Certificate & Diplomas
  • Power of Attorney/legal contracts
  • Leases/Deeds etc.

And just about anything else you need to keep safe. I don’t think anyone would like to get into the portals of ‘babus’ for a re-issue /duplicate, should you ever lose them. I wouldn’t! Once is enough! So, store the originals well, keep the photocopies safe and scan and store on devices (as well as online). For the sake of privacy I won’t be sharing how I store all my docs on my tablet! But I am giving you an idea.

Although everybody at home has their own tab (all different brands) I am in love with my Dell Venue 8 tablet! Trying to tame the paper clutter has always been a daunting task. I used to do it the old-school way, of filing it in binders/folders, but there comes a point when you have to decide what stays and what does not… I’ve successfully reduced most of our files into one cabinet of our desk. But that does not mean the paper trail for documentation would ever stop and what do you do when you are on the move and you need to have just about everything and anything ?! I follow a simple solution, I scan most of my documents with my tablet and store it in folders for easy access(although I do keep an online/ slave drive back-up).

I especially scan the shopping receipts whose ink fades in a matter of days… this is what I mean.

This way if I want to return something, I don’t hunt for a faded receipt, as I know where to find it… on my tablet! And it won’t be a faded one!

I am a ‘visual+spatial+kinesthetic’ learner (yeah I took the Howard Gardner’s- theory of multiple intelligences test!), I heavily rely on visual aids for inspiration. Whenever I come across something appealing I capture it with my camera, I sometimes make a quick sketch or I scan it. Earlier all of it was scattered- some on my camera, my phone and/or on my desktop/laptop. Now I have it all on my tablet- to keep me organized, sorted and inspired…all on a big 8” HD screen! Getting rid of my magazine collection was difficult as I enjoy skimming through old magazine for reference/inspiration.

Finally, I got rid of the huge stack but not before I scanned everything that I wanted! All the tutorials, craft ideas,  recipes, inspiration boards and all other eye candy!

I have so much of free space in my desk cabinet now!  And look how beautifully it is stored on my tablet, readily available for all the inspiration I need!

My Dell tablet is my constant companion as it is something I can always carry in my purse (it’s super slim), it works as my camera, my scribble pad, my storage device, my book reader, my blog buddy, my play station, my window to the world, my organizer, my phone and of course my home office!

What is your constant companion or your work horse? How do you tame paper clutter at home?
