Mango Lemonade

‘Nimbu Paani’ or Lemonade is always a favorite during the summer months, how about giving it a twist? Generally, I like to squeeze in a bit of lemon to most of my summer drinks but this time I added a fruity infusion to the lemonade! I made Mango Lemonade and it turned out yummylicious! Whether you’re hosting a party or you just need to cool off a hot day, how about doing it with a jug full of goodness…try this recipe. You will love it! Since the mango season is about to get over in this part of the world…there is ‘mangoness’ in everything I have been making/trying of late! Trying to have it to my heart’s content! My hubby tells me I am going overboard but children and I are loving it! The next season is too far away!

Wash and scrub the ripe mangoes thoroughly. Cut slice/cube and eat the pulp! Just don’t throw away the peels & the seeds yet, we need them! In a large pitcher filled with water (at room temperature), add lemon juice, sugar (to taste), a quarter T-spoonful of salt and the peels. Let this mixture sit for a few hours at room temperature before putting it in the chiller compartment. It hastens the infusion process if it is kept at room temperature.

Once chilled, add lots of ice, float in a few cherries and cubed mangoes, a little something to nibble on. Your mango lemonade is ready!

The peels and the seed used for infusion leave a delicious aroma and a subtle hint of mango in the lemonade to make it a flavorful drink.

If you want, you may leave the peels/seed as it is or use tongs to discard them. Personally I prefer them in the pitcher till the end… the last glass always is the most delicious one! We toss a coin for that last glass!

Have you tried any summer drink with a new flavor?

Refreshing Watermelon Drink!

Monsoon seems nowhere in sight this year… I am so longing for the rains…we are nearing mid July and there is no respite from the sweltering heat here in this part of the world; 42 degrees centigrade is not a joke! How I wish we could be posted back to somewhere in the Western Ghats… I envy my friends in that part of the country. And here I think of ways to beat the heat all day long! The only easy way that comes to my mind is to jump into the pool (and stay there for the rest of the day, unfortunately can’t do that! Although I’d love to!) or sip this thirst quenching drink! And it is an easy way out…it is super easy to make!

I deliberately didn’t mention the ‘stay-in-the-airconditioning’ way because of the long outages!! So, you are actually not left with much of a choice but to take my offer and try making this refreshing watermelon drink! Sip it all day long to beat the heat!

This fun summertime drink combines watermelon, lemon, few crushed mint leaves for that fresh punch of cool splash that would blow your senses away, I promise you!!

These are the things you need to buy… I prefer our friendly neighborhood farmer’s market, the Monday ‘haat’ (my all-time-favourite place to buy fresh greens and fruits):

  • Ripe watermelon 1 medium-sized or whatever!
  • lemon 1 for two medium glasses of slush
  • few fresh mint leaves
  • a pinch of  rock salt per glass
  • No need for any added sugar or honey unless your watermelon turns out to be not so sweet!

How to make it: It’s quite simple!

Cut pieces of watermelon and throw it in the blender, squeeze in lemon juice, add salt and add loads of crushed ice and blend. That’s it! I prefer not to blend it too smooth; I like those chunky watermelon pieces in my drink.

Pour into glasses and top it up with a few hand-teared mint leaves…just enough to leave that lovely minty flavor and aroma! Now try it and tell me that you didn’t like it! Or let me know how do you beat the heat!

Tip- No need to de-seed the watermelon, the drink would taste just fine…read about the goodness of these seeds here and here.

I don't bother to de-seed the watermelon, a few crushed seeds tastes just fine! Not to mention they add to the dietary fibre content!
