The serial hoarder in me is driving hubby and children nuts. I completely disagree with them; rather, I would say it is achieving newer heights… by heights I mean this!!
I hoard them because I believe, someday, I might hit upon an idea to recycle plastic bottles into something home worthy…how and when? I do not know! ‘When are you going to recycle them, questioned the members of the ‘home council’? Do something or lose them.’ Before I could reply, I was slapped with an ultimatum! How cruel is that?!
Okay, here is a secret confession… they are right! The stack is growing bigger by the day. It is occupying precious space. And it looks unsightly. Does it look familiar? Oh… the ultimatum was, either we should stop entertaining our guests or I should do something about it ASAP! Choosing the latter seemed like a better idea, although hubby and children unanimously decided to get rid of the bottles by selling it to the ‘Raddiwala Bhaiya’ (at least he would recycle them), if I didn’t do anything about it by the coming Sunday.
At this very moment I have dropped everything else only to deal with this crises at home and Save the World (I mean the bottle stack!). For the world – this is how you can recycle plastic bottles 🙂
Turn them into hanging planters! Since I was trying out an idea, I started with five bottles (later on it came down to four, as I ran out of raffia). Using a pen knife, cut the bottles as shown and fill it up with potting mixture. Poke a few holes for drainage.
Use any rope/cord to make this hanger, I used raffia (‘sutli’). I knotted the raffia in loops, no macramé (remember, I was in hurry to prove a point!). You can pretty this up, if you know macramé. I am happy to continue with simple knots along the length of the raffia (which was a collection of four cords), it saves me time.
I used cuttings of plants from my garden, the ones which root easily(and are difficult to kill!).
Lastly, tied some twigs and branches together to add a little visual accent to my recycled plastic bottle hanging garden!
Easy peasy! I am already making a couple of more for the other columns in the balcony, perhaps a hanging kitchen-herb garden? or a succulent one? At least for now I have everybody off my back! And I saved my stack!
